French teachers have been charged with instilling “republican values” in public schools following the beheading of the middle school teacher Samuel Paty by a young Chechen refugee last month. But they’re finding it an overwhelming task, former fellow Karina Piser (France, 2017-2019) reports for World Politics Review.

“There was unity, at first, with thousands gathering nationwide in rallies to honor Paty and defend freedom of expression,” she writes. “But soon after, his killing was swept up in a debate that has become standard fare after terrorist attacks in France: a national reckoning over Islam and its place in a society that holds fast to laicite, France’s particular vision of secularism, and other ‘republican values.’”
