Suzy Hansen was named a finalist for the 2018 Pulitzer prize for non-fiction writing for her book Notes on a Foreign Country: An American Abroad in a Post-American World. A journalist and editor based in Istanbul, she is a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine, and has written for The London Review of Books, and Vogue and GQ magazines.
Partly based on her research as an ICWA fellow in Turkey in 2007-2009, Notes on a Foreign Country is a tour-de-force combination of reportage, history and personal narrative. “You cannot grow up in the second half of the 20th century in the United States of America and live abroad in the 21st century and not feel it all the time,” she writes of Americans’ ignorance about foreign affairs, employing haunting anecdotes in her boldly contentious, page-turning narrative.
