The Cairo Review of Global Affairs – In his review of Riad Sattouf’s graphic memoir, The Arab of the Future: A Childhood in the Middle East, 1978-1984, Fellow Jonathan Guyer delves into the growing legitimacy of comics as art and “the power of alternative modes of history.” The Arab of the Future is the first in what will be a series of four volumes. This one deals with Sattouf’s early life in Libya, Syria, and France and includes several dark and difficult moments as seen through the young Sattouf’s eyes. According to Guyer “the return to Syria or Libya is now nearly impossible, and to convey those stories—however melancholy they are—offers a form of defiance.”
