Thailand’s new generation of activists is no longer content with carefully coded criticism of the monarchy, but now demands wholesale democratic change, Matthew Wheeler (Thailand, 2002-04) and Tom Felix Joehnk write in an opinion piece for The New York Times.

“Younger protesters decry Thailand’s stultifying economic and social hierarchy,” they write. “They want an end to what some call ‘feudalism.’ They denounce the double standards of a system that coddles the well-off and well-connected.”
