How is it that a sociology professor who studies deviant and criminal behavior came to be charged with serial arson? Andrew Rice (Uganda, 2002-2004) profiles Gary Maynard for New York Magazine while he awaits trial in California.
“In August 2021, law-enforcement agents apprehended [Maynard] in a remote wooded area of Northern California,” Andrew writes, “where, authorities alleged, he had applied his expertise to setting what one federal prosecutor described as an ‘insanely dangerous’ series of wildfires.”
