The National Committee on U.S.-China Relations hosted a webinar with former ICWA fellow Matthew Chitwood (China, 2017-2019) and Mei Lan to discuss how life in the Chinese countryside is changing: poverty elimination, infrastructure development, migrant labor, education and the Communist Party’s new role.
Rural people are vulnerable, Matt says, recounting the story of villager who had lost the equivalent of four life savings because of medical troubles, collapsing prices and crime.
