Hui Chinese are feeling the pressure of Beijing’s growing mistrust of Muslims, fueled by another Muslim group, the Uyghurs, former ICWA fellow Matthew Chitwood (China, 2017-2019) reports in Foreign Policy.
Until recently, “Hui and Uyghur Muslims were distinct in the minds of China’s Han majority,” he writes. “Many regarded Hui as the model Muslim minority.”
But new, stringent regulations on religious expression are changing life for Hui living in the storied town of Shadian in Yunnan province.
