The Palestinian militant group Hamas has attempted to infiltrate Israeli soldiers’ phones by posing as friendly women on the internet, former ICWA fellow Neri Zilber (Israel, 2011-2013) writes for The Daily Beast. Hundreds reportedly were targeted.
Soldiers were sent a dummy link to the Catchandsee app for privately sharing racy images. “Once clicked,” Neri writes, “it inserted powerful spyware into the soldier’s smartphone, allowing Hamas to take full control of the device—camera and GPS locator, contacts, files, images, and audio—and send all the data back to Hamas’ servers.”
