Former ICWA fellow Ezra Fieser (Guatemala, 2008-2010) reports that the yogurt billionaire Hamdi Ulukaya is asking business leaders to give jobs to refugees. A Turkish immigrant to the United States himself, Ulukaya built his best-selling Chobani brand on the back of a small business loan. Private companies have a responsibility to help solve the global refugee emergency, he says.
“The number one thing is hiring, a job,” he told Ezra. “For a refugee, it’s day and night. That’s the point at which they find their life can continue.”
Chobani employs refugees at its US plants as a policy, and Ulukaya has used his personal fortune to establish the Tent Partnership for Refugees charity.
